To attain (and to a certain extent to maintain) perfection in all departments of the garden under one’s command required a combination of skill and the study and application of the latest developments, be they horticultural, scientific or artistic. Or as Robert Fish encouraged, to keep ‘pace with the onward march of discovery and improvement; ought to be the heartfelt desire of every gardener worthy of the name, or in whose breast one spark of true and elevated ambition resides’.14

Gardening periodicals, of which there were a growing number, were a convenient way in which to obtain the latest information. Some, such as Loudon’s influential The Gardener’s Magazine (1826–43) and The Floricultural Cabinet and Florist’s Magazine (1833–59), came and went; others have exhibited extraordinary longevity. The best-known and oft-quoted The Gardeners’ Chronicle continues today as Horticulture Week. Beginning life as the Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London in 1807 and passing through a number of titular incarnations including Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society (1865–1975), The Garden is still widely read. Packed and printed in squint-formingly tiny fonts, the periodicals were a mine of useful facts and figures, including for example: descriptions of newest plant arrivals and hybrids; suggestions for the design of anything from flower beds to housing for head gardeners; questions and answers; book reviews; reports from garden societies and shows; meteorological statistics; experimental results on the research into fertilisers or plant trials; market prices, the merits or not of boilers; discussion about gardeners’ conditions, etc., etc., etc.
